The air pollution levels in Delhi-NCR and other parts of the country are DANGEROUSLY high after Diwali this year. People celebrated Diwali with bright colorful crackers but woke up to a morning of thick layer of smog, haze and hazardous pollution levels.

The amount of crackers Delhi burst has made the air unbelievably toxic to breathe in, the PM (particulate matter) 10 levels have reportedly gone up to 999, exceeding the safe limit by 10 times. It is so alarming that we can actually see and smell the pollution around us.

The pollution levels have reached to an all-time high in 17 years and scientists and doctors are warning of possibilities of very major health concerns. Exhaustion, breathlessness, asthma, throat irritation, burning of eyes are just a few very common symptoms that all of us are facing.

With the festive frenzy coming to an end, the city is choking and no one knows what to do.

While the air pollution of Delhi and its alarming levels is becoming the talk of the town and every body including the government and all media channels seems to be talking about it, no strong and corrective measures seem to have come into action.

Our health is in our hands and we need to help ourselves and our families/ friends breathe healthier. We need to stop breathing poison! Here is a list of a few things that you can do to safeguard yourself from the city’s toxic air:

  1. Use a pollution mask every time you step out – Not going out and sitting at home may not be a feasible option for a lot of people. But wearing a good quality mask can definitely help in filterig out dust particles and minimising the affects of pollution. Make sure that the pollution mask is of a good quality and filters out the pollutants well. Just any mask may not be what you really need at this time.
  2. Keep away from construction sites - Large construction sites produce a lot of air pollution and special precautions should be taken around such sites. Best to avoid them for the time being.
  3. Grow and keep more plants – We have all our life read and studied that plants are oxygenators and we should plant more and more trees. The NASA Clean Air Study (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_Clean_Air_Study) has recommended 14 natural indoor plants that work as natural air purifiers and help in purifying indoor air pollutants like benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene and toluene and ammonia giving us a healthier and more inviting space to breathe in.
  4. Wash the streets around your house – Try washing the streets instead of dusting them to avoid throwing more dust and dirt in the air. Washing the streets helps in settling the dust down.
  5. Get an air purifier – With these alarming levels of pollutions, air purifiers are a good option to clean the indoor air. Available in almost all electronic stores in different brands and price ranges, air purifiers definitely seem to be useful.
  6. Avoid travelling in open transport – Avoid two wheelers and auto-rickshaws. Instead travel by closed public transport and/or cars.
  7. Don’t go out to exercise – On a normal day everyone would recommend you to exercise in the open and allow your lungs to get some fresh air. But no longer. With these levels of pollution it is best to stay indoors specially in the early morning and late evening hours.
  8. Stay close to trees and greenery – Trees and plants are known to be the best sources of oxygen. Stay as close to greenery as possible. Specially if you do yoga or meditation, practicing in the midst of greenery will surely be beneficial.

We hope to breathe fresh healthy air soon. Till then, be careful and take care of yourselves. You can check out air purifying plants for your homes and office at https://goo.gl/QBSp2A
