Oh My Good Lord! When I read the articles on enormous environmental issues, I, as a reader, am forced to be afraid of the disastrous affects it’s creating. They are definitely grave issues which are leading to the banishment of wildlife and will act as a slow poison towards the extinction of mankind. Because of the crucial necessity of balancing the number of herbivores and carnivores, it’s necessary to save our forests from the devil called deforestation. Deforestation is the permanent destruction of the forests to make land available for various purposes. There are several factors that are leading to desertification which will be discussed in subsequent paragraphs.

I have seen a video on social media where just by increasing the number of foxes in the forest, the complete wildlife returned with the replenishing river, greener mountains and return of the extinct birds. This reduced the destruction of grass and weeds by the deer and other herbivores which in turn enhanced the vegetation and number of shrubs in the adjoining areas. That called for lots of lost birds to come back to take shelter in those greener trees. Because of all these changes there were heavy rain falls due to which the water level of the river came up substantially.  And thus, a new life began. In a similar fashion, many aspects of environment are interrelated with each other. We neglect or destroy one while it acts as a catalyst for many others. We act like fools to think, what can we do? In fact, it’s only us, who can do something worthwhile just to save ourselves. That will automatically save lot other species.

There has been lots of hues and cry regarding global warming, reduction in number of wild animals, increasing temperatures, increased pollution and population, urbanization, carbon emission, water scarcity, waste production etc. The list is actually endless and I don’t want to defer from the topic. So coming back to the point, let’s start with the some major points on the issue for desertification. Majorly five elements are responsible to influence other factors towards the grave devil. These factors —cattle ranching, urbanization, hydroelectric dams, mining and wood products—drive the majority of tropical deforestation. But why does deforestation matter? Forests—especially tropical forests—store enormous amounts of carbon. So when forests are destroyed, that carbon is released to the atmosphere, accelerating global warming. It will be very interesting to know that deforestation accounts for around 10% of total heat-trapping emissions—roughly the same as the yearly emissions from 600 million cars. In addition to storing carbon, forests provide important habitat for a long list of endangered species—and they offer many other benefits, such as clean water, forest products, and livelihoods for indigenous communities. With large areas of cheap land, relatively low labor costs, and a year-round growing season, the tropics have become a favored location for large-scale industrial commodity production. Eliminating emissions from commodity-driven tropical deforestation can play a huge role in reducing climate change—and we can do it in the near future.

It will be very interesting to know that although United States has just 5% of the world’s population, it uses 27% of the earth’s industrial woods. Now, that’s huge. The list of seven countries that contributes 60 % of earth’s total logging are

  • Canada
  • United States
  • Brazil
  • Russia
  • China
  • Indonesia
  • Democratic Republic of Congo

Apart from this, cattle ranching is also a major concern for desertification. More than 2,00,000 acres of rainforest are burned each day mostly for cattle ranching. Cattle ranching is creating or building an extensive farm on which large herds of cattle, sheep or horses are raised basically livestock, for meat or wool. Due to this, huge acres of forests are destroyed daily. It’s imperative to know that nearly 1.6 Billion people rely on forests for their

By finishing the forests we are depriving these many people from their basic needs. I know that we depend on the forest for lot many basic things such wood, food, and shelter but we can actually recycle lot of stuff to prevent further damage. Refurbishing lot of wooden stuff or paper will not only save money, time and labor but it will also conserve energy. Make sure to use minimal paper in workplaces and if necessary, use the stuff which is recyclable. Many offices have joined hands with several organizations and NGOs working for this cause and have introduced zero- deforestation policies that require suppliers to produce commodities in such a way that has minimal impact on natural forests and climate. Not only in workplaces, this virtue can be followed and applied in every walk of daily habitat. Another important pointer is to create awareness. Global Forest Watch uses satellites, open data and crowd sourcing to give companies buying commodities and resources better idea about whether they are unwittingly contributing to deforestation.

This is a high time to react to save our forest as “Rainforests are the climatic Umbrellas to our planet”.
